Business card design tips
A business card is small, so every choice counts.
Keep it readable
- Use at least 8 to 9 point type for contact details. Smaller text is hard to read once printed.
- Choose strong contrast. Dark text on a light background (or the reverse) prints more reliably than mid-tone combinations.
- Limit yourself to one or two typefaces.
Say less
List only the ways you actually want to be contacted. A name, a title, one phone number or email, and a website is often enough. Extra social links add clutter, so pick the ones that matter to your work.
Leave space
Empty space makes a card look confident. Keep text away from the edges so trimming variation does not clip it.
Use the back
The back is free space. A logo, a tagline, or a QR code works well. A simple bold logo on a solid color is a strong, low-effort design.
QR code tips
- Print the code at least about 0.8 inch square so phones scan it easily.
- Keep a white border around it, and do not place it over a busy background.
- Always scan a printed test card with a phone before printing a full batch.
- Fewer details in the code make it simpler and easier to scan.
Proofread
Check every phone number, email and web address twice, and ask someone else to read it. A typo is hard to fix after printing.
